“The body of the play is essentially everything Cordelia says in ‘Lear,’ in a changed meter more suitable to Noh cadences,” Erik Ehn says…. The play is conceived of as a phantasmal Noh warrior play – that is, Cordelia is represented as a ghost stuck between the world of the living and the world of the dead, and is called upon to look back on her past decisions and actions. Cordelia appears as a ghost precisely because she is attached to a moment in her life when she said nothing, but perhaps would have done better to say something.
